Rakemu Api
A team from the Faculty of Science collaborated with the Sri Lanka Army to develop a mobile and web-based application, ‘Rakemu Api’ as a social responsibility project on the face of the COVID-19 outbreak. This application enables people of Sri Lanka located at any corner of the country to make online requests for essential medical/food supplies or to report medical symptoms associated with the disease. The requests are forwarded to the Disaster Management Center of Sri Lanka for attention/action by a dedicated team of members under the Sri Lanka National Operation Center for Prevention of COVID – 19 Outbreak. This centre is operated and is directed by the commander of Sri Lanka Army and is playing a vital role in the coordination of relief operations for the people affected by COVID-19 outbreak in Sri Lanka. The centre also works in close collaboration with the health care professionals of the Ministry of Health, the Divisional Secretariats and other related government/other organizations. The telecommunication regulatory commission and the media organizations helped promote the app among the people of Sri Lanka. The gathered information will also be used by a Data Analytics team of the Faculty of Science to possibly identify disease outbreak locations and vulnerable elderly people. Work is under progress to share overall statistics in the ‘Rekemu Api’ website, which will further facilitate public awareness, policy decision making as well as operations of the independent community help networks.
