The Legal and Documentation Branch manages legal services for the University and plays a key role in providing legal assistance. It delivers its services under the following main areas:
- Advisory functions
- Functions related to court cases
- Functions related to disciplinary inquiries
- Vetting legal instruments such as deeds, MoUs, and agreements
- Convening the By-law Committee and the Legislation Committee
- Providing information under the Right to Information Act, No. 12 of 2016
ACTIVITIES
- Appear in court cases (Magistrate Court, District Court, High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court) on behalf of the University.
- Appear for inquiries at the University Services Appeals Board, Human Rights Commission, Labour Tribunal, Labour Department, and Ombudsman.
- Take steps to hold formal domestic disciplinary inquiries at the University in coordination with respective Divisions/Departments/Faculties.
- Conduct preliminary investigations and formal disciplinary inquiries.
- Vet legal documents (MoUs, deeds, agreements, letters of intent, etc.).
- Provide legal advice on legal, regulatory, policy, and other related matters.
- Coordinate and conduct meetings of the Legislation Committee.
- Prepare responses to requests made under the Right to Information Act and appear before the Right to Information Commission.
- Maintain documentation related to all litigation matters and inquiries concerning the University.
- Submit Memos to the Council/Finance Committee regarding Litigation matters, Inquiries and follow-up action would be taken according to the decision.
- Preparation and filing of necessary documents, handling and maintaining files, participating in consultations, liaising with the Attorney General’s Department and Counsels in the Unofficial Bar by providing necessary details to defend the University in various Courts.
- Vet all types of documents, including by-laws related to undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as legally executable documents.
- Take necessary steps to obtain ownership of lands belonging to the University.
