Opening of Multicultural Centre at the Department of Sociology, followed by a Book Launching Event
The Opening Ceremony of the Multicultural Centre of the Department of Sociology, held on the 27th of November 2015 at the Department of Sociology was a memorable success. Prof. LakshmanDissanayake, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, Prof. AthulaRanasignhe, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Thusitha Abeytunga, Director of the University Development Grant of HETC, Dr. P. Wijetunge, Librarian of the Main Library and other distinguished guests graced this occasion.
The Multicultural Centre of the Department of Sociology was established under the Ethnic Cohesion Project of the HETC for the purpose of fostering the cultural diversity which exists within the university community and facilitating full participation of all staff and students in educational, recreational, social and cultural activities organized by the centre. The centre hopes to focus all programmes and events organized under the centre on cultural teaching and learning, with special emphasis on diversity of community representing a variety of backgrounds. Dr. ChandaniLiyanage, Head of the Department of Sociology, delivered the welcome address and Prof. Premakumara de Silva, Coordinator of the Multicultural Centre addressed the gathering highlighting the objectives and future activities of the centre.
The opening ceremony of the multicultural centre was followed by a book launching event of two books- ‘Kallaththoni’ a translation by Mr. Swaminanthan Vimal and ‘Sinna Thuraiyin Sriya Ulagam’ a translation by Mr. Ravi Rathinavel. Mr. Ravi Rathinavel addressed the gathering on his experiences of translating the novel and a cultural event was organized by students of the Department of Sociology.
