Pioneering the Metaverse: Next-Gen Real-Time Vessel Traffic Monitoring
At the prestigious 22nd Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards hosted in Hong Kong at Cyberport from December 6th to 7th, 2023, VT≋VR emerged as the singular triumph from Sri Lanka, standing out among 16 participating economies and competing against top universities across the region. The event witnessed the participation of 70 judges, 500+ delegates, and representatives from Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam, with 24 diverse categories.
This groundbreaking achievement was spearheaded by a final-year computer science honours project from the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC), led by Mr Naushikha Jayawickrama and supervised by Dr Damitha Sandaruwan. Competing against top universities from 16 other countries, VT≋VR, titled “Pioneering the Metaverse: Next-Gen Real-Time Vessel Traffic Monitoring” secured the sole victory for Sri Lanka along with five other Merit Award winners.
VT≋VR’s revolutionary metaverse-driven system redefines maritime monitoring by seamlessly integrating virtual reality (VR) with head-mounted displays (HMDs). Overcoming challenges posed by traditional methods, such as Dead Reckoning, the project introduces an innovative Adaptive Geometric Blending technique, ensuring unparalleled realism, believability, and accuracy. Leveraging cutting-edge technologies like Unreal Engine 5, Meta Quest, and Cesium’s 3D tiling while adhering to industry standards such as AIS, and VT≋VR makes substantial contributions to real-time vessel motion prediction. Beyond the accolades, VT≋VR also clinched the gold award in the tertiary student category at the 25th National ICT Awards (NBQSA) 2023, showcasing its excellence and innovation on a national scale. This recognition positions VT≋VR at the forefront of advancing maritime operations and safety through the integration of metaverse and digital twin concepts.
