Faculty of Law Triumphs at Crisis Control International Competition on Law of the Sea

The team representing the Faculty of Law emerged as the winners at the 2nd Edition of the Crisis Control International Competition on the Law of the Sea. This competition was organized by Govind Ramnath Kare College of Law, India, in collaboration with Faculdade de Direito da Universidade De Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal, in 2023. The winning team consisted of Ms Sayuni Masakorala (The Captain), Ms Maleesha Perera, and Ms Janani De Silva. They were honoured for their outstanding achievement on January 2, 2024, by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor N S Punchihewa.
The competition, themed ‘Law of the Sea,’ witnessed the University of Colombo team competing against numerous proficient teams to secure their victory. The participating teams engaged in learning sessions facilitated by two renowned experts in the field, Professor Fernando Loureiro Bastos and Dr Abdullah Al Arif, focusing on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and Maritime Law. Following these sessions, teams were presented with moot propositions addressing contemporary issues, requiring them to submit well-structured arguments in support of their positions. Based on their performance in the rounds, the University of Colombo team was declared the competition winners. Throughout the competition, the team received valuable guidance from Professor Naazima Kamardeen, the Senior Treasurer of the Moot Court and Debating Society of the University.
