Awareness Session on Green Building Concepts for University Staff – CEI
The Centre for Environmental Initiatives (CEI) successfully conducted an awareness session on Green Building Concepts for university staff on 13 August 2026, as part of its ongoing efforts to promote and integrate sustainable practices into University operations and development activities.
The session was facilitated by two representatives from the Urban Development Authority (UDA) of Sri Lanka, Mr Umakaran Menalanan, Assistant Director (Landscape), Environment and Landscape Division and Ms Ruwanara Fernando, Landscape Architect. The session was attended by over 30 participants representing various Faculties, Institutes, and administrative branches involved in building-related planning, development, maintenance, and management activities within the University.
The session covered seven major areas related to green building concepts, including Energy Efficiency, Sustainable Land Management and Planning, Building Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Water Efficiency, Green Innovations, and Socio-Cultural Compatibility. The resource persons discussed the importance of incorporating sustainability considerations from the planning and design stages of buildings and highlighted practical approaches that can be adopted to improve the environmental performance of university buildings.
The session also provided university staff with valuable guidance on sustainable building practices, green building rating systems applicable in Sri Lanka, and environmentally responsible approaches to planning, designing, constructing, and managing buildings. Particular attention was given to practical measures that can contribute to energy and water efficiency, improved indoor environmental quality, responsible use of resources, and the development of greener and more sustainable campus environments.
The session served as a valuable platform for enhancing the knowledge and awareness of university staff and encouraging the integration of green building concepts into future planning and development activities of the University.
