University of Colombo Leads the Way with “Digital Detox Drive” E-Waste Campaign

The University of Colombo marked World Environment Day, June 5, 2025, by launching its “Digital Detox Drive,” a comprehensive e-waste collection campaign. This initiative, designed to foster environmental responsibility and promote the proper disposal of electronic waste, was a collaboration between the Centre for Planetary Health, Faculty of Medicine, and the Centre for Environmental Initiatives (CEI) at the University.
As a vibrant hub of technological activity, the campus naturally generates a substantial amount of electronic waste, ranging from outdated laptops and mobile phones to discarded chargers and even defunct laboratory equipment. The improper disposal of these items poses a significant threat, as harmful chemicals can leach into the environment, endangering both human health and local ecosystems. Then, the campaign encouraged every member of the university community to responsibly discard their unwanted electronic devices, including old mobile phones, laptops, and other forms of e-waste.
The launch event itself was a testament to the unwavering commitment of the university to sustainability, graced by the presence of key figures. Professor Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, the Vice Chancellor of the University, joined Professor Tharanga Thoradeniya, Director of the Centre for Planetary Health, and Dr Jinendra Dissanayake, Acting Director of CEI. Their participation, alongside enthusiastic staff and student societies like Base for Enthusiasts of Environmental Science and Zoology (BEEZ) and Botanical Society (BOTSOC), reaffirmed the dedication to collective environmental responsibility. The “Digital Detox Drive” proved to be a resounding success, largely owing to the active engagement of the entire university community. Their shared commitment to environmental responsibility was evident, as together, the University of Colombo worked towards a healthier planet.
