Workshop on “Legal Framework of Universities and Punishable Offences” – SDC
The Staff Development Centre (SDC) conducted a workshop on “Legal Framework of Universities and Punishable Offences” on 19 May 2026 at the Board Room of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
The workshop was conducted by Emeritus Professor M. J. S. Wijeyaratne of the University of Kelaniya, who also serves as a Council Member of the University of Colombo. Professor Wijeyaratne provided participants with valuable insights into the legal framework governing universities, relevant legal provisions, responsibilities associated with academic service, and disciplinary matters and punishable offences within the university context.
The programme provided academic staff with an opportunity to enhance their awareness of the legal and regulatory dimensions of university service and to develop a clearer understanding of the responsibilities and disciplinary implications associated with their roles. The sessions also encouraged participant engagement and discussion on practical issues relevant to the university environment.
The workshop was attended by approximately 100 academic staff members and was conducted under the guidance of Professor SP Premaratna, the Director of the SDC, with coordination by Dr GRP Silva.
