On August 12th, 2024, the University of Colombo and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) formalized a partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the JICA Chair Program 2024/25. The signing ceremony took place at College House.

The MOU was signed by Mr Yamada Tetsuya, Chief Representative of JICA Sri Lanka, and Senior Professor (Chair) H D Karunaratne, Vice Chancellor of the University. This marks the third consecutive year that the JICA Chair Program is being conducted at the university.

The JICA Chair Program aims to expand opportunities for Japanese studies and to share insights into Japan’s modernization process, socio-economic and political aspects, and approach to international cooperation. Through a series of intensive lectures, course participants will gain valuable knowledge, which they will be encouraged to apply more widely and openly. The ultimate goal is to promote sustainable socio-economic growth in Sri Lanka by leveraging Japan’s development experiences.

This continued collaboration between JICA and the University of Colombo underscores the commitment to fostering educational exchange and utilizing Japan’s expertise to support Sri Lanka’s development efforts.
