Navigating Environmental Sustainability for Higher University Rankings: Awareness Programme

The Center for Environmental Initiatives (CEI) conducted the World Environment Day 2024 awareness programme, titled “Navigating Environmental Sustainability for Higher University Rankings” with the participation of both staff and students.

The online event was held on June 5th, 2024, hosted by Dr Chalaka Fernando, the Manager of the Environmental Management Plan at the Australian National University (ANU), Canberra, Australia. The event was graced by the Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor (Chair) H D Karunaratne. The session focused on various aspects of current sustainability university ranking systems. It highlighted the vital link and importance between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and university research, emphasizing how SDG metrics and indicators can be integrated into university systems to enhance sustainability impact and ranking. Additionally, the importance of data availability in the ranking process, the role of key stakeholders, management commitments, and strategies to improve the University of Colombo’s ranking were thoroughly explored.
