Exploring Japan’s Path to Modernization: A Special Lecture by H.E. Ambassador Mizukoshi Hideaki

The University of Colombo proudly hosted a special lecture on October 1, 2024, as part of the esteemed JICA Chair Programme 2024/25, which has been fostering academic collaboration between Japan and Sri Lanka since its inception in 2021. Held at the Jubilee Ballroom of the Galle Face Hotel, the lecture featured His Excellency Mr Mizukoshi Hideaki, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, who shared his reflections on “The History of Japan’s Development and the Messages for Sri Lanka.”

In his address, Ambassador Mizukoshi offered a detailed exploration of Japan’s journey toward modernization, sharing valuable historical lessons and insights from his three years of service in Sri Lanka. He emphasized Japan’s ability to transform external pressures into opportunities for development, the importance of fostering competitive industries for sustainable growth, and the necessity of addressing corruption to rebuild trust with the public and international stakeholders.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from over 150 attendees, including students, faculty members from the Universities of Colombo and Peradeniya, and Government Officials who had pursued higher studies in Japan through the Japanese Development Studies (JDS) program. The lecture was followed by a dynamic Q&A session, allowing participants to delve deeper into the themes discussed. Additionally, former JDS alumni delivered compelling presentations on their experiences studying in Japan, emphasizing the lessons they had learned and their relevance to Sri Lanka’s development trajectory.
This inspiring event not only highlighted the potential pathways for Sri Lanka’s growth through the lens of Japan’s experience but also reinforced the bonds of friendship and academic cooperation between the two nations.
