An Environmentally Friendly Instrument Used for Chasing Elephants Using an Infra Sound Technique

Infrasound frequencies for which elephants are sensitive are generated by an automated system that has been developed to chase elephants with no physical harm to the animal. The system comprises a PIR sensor coupled with a GSM model powered with a battery charged by a solar panel. These units are assembled as a single unit and fixed to the elephant protecting fence established in elephant raiding areas. As this instrument recognizes an elephant, it emits infrasound frequencies with specific notice and continues till the animal moves away. A message goes to the owner too about the presence of the elephant which helps the owner take necessary precautions. The cost of production of this instrument is about Rs. 100,000. This was invented by Mr. T. G. B. Dhanushke, an academic staff member, and Mr. Manoj Sarange, final year student at the Institute of Agro Technology and Rural Sciences, Waligattha.
