අංගම් මඩුව | “Angam Maduwa”
Angampora is the generic description of the Sri Lankan traditional martial arts that is renowned for their strong focus on the mental, combative and tackling skills. Often many Angampora demonstrations include skilled use of traditional weaponry and, emotional and powerful combination of acrobatics and throws. Traditionally Sinhalese soldiers practiced Angampora to proclaim their strength and intimidate the opposition before marching into the battlefront, and then to obliterate their enemy.
For the first time in the history of the University of Colombo, the students and staff have experienced an inspirational traditional Sri Lankan martial art Angampora performance on the 9th May 2018, at the University of Colombo Gymnasium. This truly unique and intimate live performance was presented by the “Sri Lanka Air Force Angampora group” under the guidance of the “Angampora Guru” Mr. Ajantha Mahantharachchi. This performance was graced by one of the leading Sociologists and Anthropologists in Sri Lanka, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts – Professor Premakumara de Silva.
This event was a prelude to introducing Angampora as a new undergraduate course unit delivered through the newly established Sports Studies Stream, in the Faculty of Arts. On behalf of the Department of Sociology, the convener of Sports Studies, Dr. Samantha Nanayakkara organized this event successfully.
