Hong Kong Polytechnic University Delegation Visits University of Colombo to Strengthen Academic Ties
A delegation from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) visited the University of Colombo on 23rd July 2026 as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen academic collaboration between the two institutions. Ranked 54th in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and 83rd by Times Higher Education, PolyU is recognised as one of the world’s leading universities, with strength in fields such as nursing and engineering.
The delegation comprised Dr Tai-fai Lam (Council Chairman), Professor Ben Young (Vice President, Student and Global Affairs), Professor Maggie Lu (Director, Confucius Institute of Hong Kong), Mr Gavin Ngai (Deputy Director, Global Engagement) and Ms Mengqing Fu (Executive Officer, Confucius Institute of Hong Kong).
The delegation was received by Professor Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, and Dr Iroja Caldera, Director of the International Office. In his remarks, Prof. Ben Young noted that PolyU remains committed to excellence in teaching and learning, research and innovation, and service to the community. Prof. Karunathilake highlighted that collaboration in the fields of technology and nursing would be especially valuable, given that these faculties are relatively new at the University of Colombo.
Discussions between the two universities centred on potential avenues for cooperation, including student and staff exchange programmes and academic and teaching support, laying the groundwork for a mutually beneficial partnership.
