2nd International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC 2018)
The International Conference on Climate Change 2018 (ICCC 2018) was held from 15th-16th February, 2018 at Hotel Taj Samudra Colombo, Sri Lanka. ICCC 2018 was hosted by the University of Colombo in collaboration with the Colorado State University, USA as the Academic partner of the Conference. The Climate Change Secretariat, the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, Sri Lanka is the supporting ministry of the Conference and the conference was organized by The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM).
The Conference witnessed the participation more than 100 participants representing more than 20 countries across the world. The countries included Sri Lanka, Germany, United States, United Kingdom, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Taiwan, Thailand, India, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Nepal, Myanmar, Iran, Australia, Japan, Turkey, France, Mexico and United Arab Emirates, etc.
The Conference was chaired by Dr. Erandathie Lokupitiya, Senior Lecturer, Department of Zoology and Environment Sciences, University of Colombo. The keynote forum was represented by eminent personalities in the field of Climate Change: Prof. Keith Paustian, Senior Research Scientist, Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory from Colorado State University, USA and Dr. Kevin Schaefer from the National Snow and Ice Data Center, University of Colorado, USA. Mr. Isanka P. Gamage was the conference convener, the Managing Director of TIIKM.
“ICCC 2018” addressed a wide range of critically important areas in relation to Climate Change under the theme “Climate Change and Global Sustainability: Action for Bridging the Gap” and created a great platform to discuss and find solutions to climate change-related issues in achieving Global Sustainability. Popular topics that discussed were Climate Change and Food Security, Climate Change and Green initiatives, the role of Renewable Energy sources and Social issues in relation to adverse Climate Changes, etc..
ICCC 2018 provided a solid platform for over 100 researchers and policy makers from across the globe to share their research findings and discuss the policy implications. The conference consisted of thirteen technical sessions and a poster session, during which researchers from around the world presented their research findings. The technical sessions on the following areas:
- Climate Prediction: Modeling and Detection of Recent and Future Climate Change
- Climate Change, Adaptation, Mitigation and Sustainable Development
- Climate Change and Agriculture
- Urbanization and Climate risk Implications in Coastal and Other Areas
- Climate Change and Technology
- Climate Change Impacts on Biodiversity conservation and Natural Resource Management
- Climate Change: Impacts on Water, Sanitation and Health in the Developing World
The above topics were covered by oral, poster, and few virtual presentations.
A Publication Workshop and a Sustainability Forum with a team of panelists consisting of experts representing different economic sectors were also held in addition to the main program of the conference.
Young researchers including the undergraduate and postgraduate students of University of Colombo got the opportunity to share their research findings; Ms. Sanduni Kanchana Somarathne from University of Colombo won a medal for the best session presentation. Overall, ICCC 2018 provided a refreshing experience for all to gain a better understanding about how the other individuals and organizations are meeting the challenges in their Action for Bridging the Gap between Climate Change and Global Sustainability.
