Undergraduate Students Launch ‘Saviya’ Initiative to Support Communities in Need

The aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah left communities shaken and landscapes changed. From this devastation, strength has emerged. Across the country, rebuilding has begun patiently, with hope leading the way. Supporting our communities’ recovery is crucial during this time of dire need, as the severe floods displaced thousands, interrupted schooling in several districts, and left many communities facing an acute shortage of basic supplies. The student societies of the University of Colombo launched Saviya, a joint relief initiative aimed at providing practical assistance to affected families.
The first stage of the initiative took place on December 1, 2025, at the Student Service Centre, where volunteers focused on gathering dry rations and emergency essentials for households that had suddenly lost access to daily necessities. This collection drive brought together a wide range of student groups: BEEZ, AIESEC Colombo Central, BOTSOC, SAIFA, Department of Statistics, the Rotaract and Leo Clubs, Physics and Astronomical Societies, the Science Society, Gavel Club, UOC Venturers, the Students’ Computer Lounge & Library and the FOS Media, all contributing to make this initiative a reality. Their combined efforts ensured that the contributions were sorted efficiently and delivered to flood-stricken areas through coordination with the Air Force Camp at Ratmalana.
The second stage focused on the nation’s future: the schoolchildren in the affected districts. On December 8, 2025, essential school supplies were distributed, ensuring that their education would not be disrupted by the unexpected natural disaster.
Throughout both stages, Saviya demonstrated the unwavering commitment of the University’s undergraduates to stand with communities beyond their borders.
