Lions Clubs Donate Essential Medical Supplies to University Medical Centre

On May 29th, 2024, a significant event unfolded as the Lions Clubs of Mahara, Galgamuwa, Colombo Blue Sapphire, Meerigama Metro, and Kurunegala Apexro, joined hands to donate essential medical supplies to the University of Colombo’s medical centre, which serves the entire university community. Additionally, the Gampaha Radiance generously offered 10 scholarships that will be awarded monthly for one year, for differently abled students at the university.

The Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor (Chair) H D Karunaratne, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor L Manawadu, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor N S Punchihewa, the Registrar, Mrs K C S Perera, the Director of the Centre for Disability Research, Education and Practice, Dr Pathmakumara Jayasingha, the Senior Student Counsellor, Dr Rajitha Silva, Lion Anura K Dissanayake, District Governor 306-B2, Lion Subashini Lokubalasooriya, President of Gampaha Radiance, and other officials from the Lions Clubs graced this auspicious occasion.

The event commenced with a Welcome Speech by Dr Rajitha Silva, emphasizing the university’s steadfast support for students despite economic challenges and budget constraints. The donations were crucial for sustaining ongoing activities and facilitating future endeavours. The Vice Chancellor addressed the audience, providing insights into the university’s history and presenting statistics. He expressed profound gratitude for the donations and scholarships, highlighting the transformative impact of even modest contributions. Subsequently, Ms Lokubalasooriya and Mr Dissanayake delivered speeches, pledging continued support from the Lions Club, and encouraging the university to establish its own Lions Club. A brief video showcasing the Centre for Disability Research, Education and Practice followed.

The donation ceremony followed, with Professor Karunaratne, Mr Dissanayake, Dr K D I Vasudewa, the Medical Officer, and other medical centre officials leading the proceedings. Lions Club members presented the donations, and commemorative photographs were taken to mark the occasion. Dr Jayasinghe concluded the event with a vote of thanks, inviting scholarship recipients to introduce themselves briefly. Special appreciation was extended to Mr Hemantha Bandara for coordinating the event.
