HRDC Hosts a Two-Day Workshop on “Learn R: A Practical Introduction to Data Analytics”
The Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC), in collaboration with the Centre for Data Science, Faculty of Science, conducted a two-day workshop titled “Learn R: A Practical Introduction to Data Analytics” on the 8th and 15th of May 2025. This workshop was designed to provide participants with a solid foundation in R programming, a widely used tool in the field of data science, enabling them to apply analytical techniques effectively in their professional roles.
The sessions were held from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. at the Computer Laboratory of the Department of Statistics, Faculty of Science. Over the course of the two days, participants were introduced to key concepts in R, including data manipulation, visualisation, and statistical analysis. Practical exercises allowed them to apply what they learned in real time, making the sessions highly interactive and engaging. The session also emphasised the importance of equipping staff with advanced data analytical skills to meet the growing demands in research, academia, and administrative decision-making.
A total of 75 participants attended the workshop, comprising academic staff members of the University of Colombo, academic support staff, and several government officers whose work involves statistical analysis and data handling. The diversity of the participants enriched the discussions and practical activities, fostering knowledge sharing across different professional backgrounds.
The sessions were delivered by Dr J.H.D.S.P. Tissera, Director, Centre for Data Science, Faculty of Science and Dr Sameera Viswakula, Senior Lecturer, Department of Statistics, Faculty of Science. Both resource persons brought a wealth of expertise to the workshop, combining theoretical knowledge with practical applications. Their interactive approach helped participants to build confidence in using R for various data analytics tasks, from basic programming to creating insightful data visualisations.
Participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to enhance their skills in data analytics, highlighting the relevance of R programming in research and decision-making. The workshop concluded with a strong commitment to further promote training in data science within the University and beyond, aligning with global trends towards data-driven innovation.
