Guest Lecture and Art Exhibition Held in Collaboration with the Embassy of Egypt
The University of Colombo, in collaboration with the Embassy of Egypt to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, hosted a distinguished event that featured a guest lecture and an art exhibition on July 30th, 2024. This event, organized by the Department of History and the Arabic and Islamic Civilization Unit of the Faculty of Arts, highlighted the rich cultural heritage of Egypt and fostered a meaningful exchange of knowledge and ideas.
The art exhibition, which took place at the Orange Area of the Faculty of Arts, was officially opened by His Excellency Maged Mosleh, the Ambassador of Egypt to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, alongside the Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, Senior Professor (Chair) H D Karunaratne. The exhibition was organized by the Embassy of Egypt and featured artworks for Sri Lankan school children. The University of Colombo graciously hosted this exhibition at the request of the Egyptian Embassy.
The day’s events began with the arrival of guests at the Arts Faculty’s Orange Area. The official opening of the art exhibition took place thereafter, followed by a welcome address by the Vice Chancellor, who extended a warm welcome to His Excellency Maged Mosleh.
The guest lecture was titled “Egyptian Cultural Heritage”. His Excellency Maged Mosleh delivered a highly engaging and informative presentation, accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation, that captivated the audience. The lecture offered deep insights into Egypt’s rich cultural history and its global significance. The session was interactive, with students and academics from the Faculty of Arts actively participating in the discussion.
The Q&A session, moderated by Professor Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri, Chair Professor of History, allowed for further exploration of the topics discussed during the lecture. The event also saw the active participation of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and a representative from the Embassy of Palestine, both of whom contributed valuable perspectives to the discussion.
This collaboration between the University of Colombo and the Embassy of Egypt underscored the importance of cultural exchange and the role of academic institutions in fostering global understanding. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr U A Ameer, Head of the Arabic and Islamic Civilization Unit and it was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
