Dr Novil Wijesekara Meets Vice Chancellor to Discuss GeoAI Disaster Resilience Initiative
Dr Novil Wijesekara met with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, on 16th October 2025 at the College House premises. He is an alumnus of the University of Colombo and has participated in several U.S. Department of State fellowship programs — including the Community Solutions Program, Fulbright Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship, Asia Foundation Development Fellowship, and the Community Engagement Exchange Program.
During the meeting, Dr Wijesekara provided an overview of the GeoAI for Disaster Resilience project, Empowering Professionals and Youth in Sri Lanka through U.S. Technology and AI-Driven Geospatial Solutions for Disaster Preparedness and Response, a winning initiative of the global Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF) competition, co-led by Dr Wijesekara and Dr Aslam Saja of South Eastern University. The project will be implemented in collaboration with the Association of Disaster Risk Management Professionals of Sri Lanka (ADRiMP). This initiative demonstrates how international professional fellowship programs can foster long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships between Sri Lanka and the United States. The GeoAI for Disaster Resilience project is supported by the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka.
