
BSc in Financial Engineering Degree Receives Accreditation from the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI), UK
University of Colombo marked a significant milestone on 9th October 2025 at the Senate Hall, as the BSc in Financial Engineering degree program received official accreditation from the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI), United Kingdom.
The ceremony was graced by several distinguished guests, including Mr Andrew Patrick, British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka; Mr Michael Cole-Fontayn, Chairman of CISI; Mr Michael Fernandopulle, Country Head of CISI Sri Lanka; and Mr Nandika Buddhipala, President of the CISI National Advisory Council and Board Trustee. Representing the University of Colombo were Professor Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, Vice Chancellor; Professor Upul Sonnadara, Dean of the Faculty of Science; Dr Dayal Dharmasena, Head of the Department of Mathematics; and Professor Sanjeewa Perera, Coordinator of the BSc in Financial Engineering program.
Through this accreditation, students completing the BSc in Financial Engineering will now receive enhanced Associate (ACSI) membership of CISI upon graduation. This prestigious recognition allows graduates to use the ACSI designation, a globally respected credential in the financial services industry. In addition, students will gain exclusive access to CISI professional events, fostering knowledge exchange and valuable networking opportunities within the international finance community. This collaboration represents a forward-looking initiative aimed at bridging academia and industry, ensuring that graduates are equipped with both the technical expertise and professional recognition needed to thrive in global financial markets. Moreover, it establishes a clear pathway for long-term career progression through the CISI membership hierarchy—from Associate (ACSI) to Member (MCSI), Chartered Member (Chartered MCSI), and ultimately Chartered Fellow (FCSI) status.
Speaking at the event, university leaders and CISI representatives jointly emphasised the importance of global professional standards in shaping the next generation of finance professionals. They highlighted the shared commitment of the University of Colombo and CISI to nurturing academic excellence, professional ethics, and international engagement within Sri Lanka’s higher education and financial sectors.
