Retains Top Rank as University in Sri Lanka: Webometrics 2026 (2nd Edition)
The University of Colombo has once again secured the No. 1 position among universities in Sri Lanka in the July 2026 edition of the Webometrics Ranking of Universities, maintaining its leadership in the national higher education landscape. Globally, the University is ranked 1,745th among more than 32,000 higher education institutions (HEIs) from over 200 countries. The Ranking Web (Webometrics) evaluates higher education institutions worldwide through a comprehensive ranking methodology.
The ranking methodology is based on three key indicators: Visibility (50%), which measures the number of external networks linking to the university’s main web domain (source: Majestic); Excellence (40%), which considers the number of publications among the top 10% most cited papers across 27 academic disciplines during the 2021–2025 period (source: SCImago); and Openness (10%), which measures the total number of citations received during 2021–2025 by institutions with a registered Research Organization Registry (ROR) identifier (source: OpenAlex).
This significant achievement highlights the institution’s continued dedication to advancing academic excellence and strengthening its research influence.
