Robert Koch Institute and University of Colombo Join Forces to Strengthen Sri Lanka’s Health Security
The University of Colombo, in collaboration with the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany, marked a significant milestone in advancing Sri Lanka’s national health security through the IDEA Project (Infectious Disease Emergency Assessment). A special event to recognise and reaffirm this long-standing international partnership was held on 24th July 2025 at the College House premises, with the participation of Professor Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, and representatives from RKI. This impactful collaboration is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Health under the Global Health Protection Program (GHPP), and is focused on enhancing preparedness and resilience in the face of public health challenges in Sri Lanka. The project significantly strengthens local diagnostic and laboratory capacity, improving the nation’s preparedness for both endemic and emerging viral threats.
Through the One Health approach, the University integrates human, animal, and environmental health into training and research, equipping healthcare professionals with advanced molecular diagnostic skills.
This international partnership reflects the University’s dedication to innovation, collaboration, and public health. Together, we are building a resilient and prepared Sri Lanka.
