Dr. Channa Senanayake is a senior lecturer in the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology of Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. He obtained his M.B.B.S degree with Second Class Honours in 1986 from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. He completed his Post-graduate Diploma in Medical Microbiology and MD in Virology in 1991 and 1996 from the Post-graduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo.

He started his career as an Intern House Officer at Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Colombo in 1986. He joined the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo as a Lecturer in Microbiology in 1989. He was the Head of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology from 2006 – 2013 and 2015 – 2019.

Dr. Senanayake has authored several publications related to Bacteriology and Virology Infectious Diseases. Typing of herpes simplex virus by Polymerase Change Reaction (PCR) isolated from genital and non-genital lesions in Sri Lanka, The prevalence of Hepatitis B markers among sex workers and antenatal mothers in Colombo, and Investigation of an outbreak of whooping cough by PCR are some of his Research achievements developing for the first time in Sri Lanka.
