Dr. Ashwini de Abrew graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo in 2007, with Second Class Honours (Upper Division), First Class Honours in Applied Sciences and Distinctions in Parasitology and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She was awarded the Vishvanathan gold medal for excellence in clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She joined the Medical Education Development and Research Center (MEDARC), now the Department of Medical Education, in 2009. She enrolled in the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo for further study in Medical Education and is presently reading for a MD in Medical Education.

Dr. De Abrew is keenly interested in curriculum development, staff development, technology based learning and student support. Outside her primary specialty of Medical Education, she has research interests in Non-Communicable Diseases, Women’s Health and Clinical Trial Registration. As a young researcher, she has been recognized by the Asia Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH) for the young researcher travel award, and by the National Institute of Health, USA as a trainee of the ASCEND programme.

She contributes to the Faculty by supporting teaching activities in the MBBS and BSc Physiotherapy programmes of study. She has additionally been an office bearer of the Clinical Programme, Quality Assurance Cell and Language Unit. Dr de Abrew is the Treasurer of the WHO Collaborating Center in Medical Education at the Faculty, and the Assistant Secretary of the Sri Lanka Clinical Trials Registry.
