Prof. Piyaseeli Wijegunasinghe memorial ceremony
A memorial function was organized to commemorate Prof. Piyaseeli Wijegunasinghe who was a member of the academic staff in Sinhala Department for number of years. The memorial ceremony was organized on-behalf of the second death anniversary of her on 03-09-2012 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.  Prof. Sarath Wijesooriya and Dr. Liyanage Amarakeerthi made speeches in the event "Piyaseeli Wijegunasinghe Thoragath Lipi" book was launched in this ceremony.  It was edited by Senior Lecturer, Ven Agalakada Sirisumana, Head,  Department of Sinhala.
Memorial Ceremony of Prof. M.B. Ariyapala
This was organized in 2012 for the second time. Prof. J.B. Disanayake and Prof. Oliver Abenayake addressed the gathering.  Except the M.B. Ariyapala award which is granted at the annual graduation, allocated two hundred thousand for another prize and it will be granted for the best dissertation on classical Sinhala literature of the year.
Presenting Research Papers
Presenting research papers which are related to the dissertation of Sinhala Special Degree by the final year students are conducted monthly. This was chaired by an academic from another University who is related to the corresponding subject.
Symposium of Department
The research symposium organized by the Department of Sinhala held on 6th October, 2011 at the auditorium of Economic with the presence of the Vice-chancellor, Prof, Kshanika Hirimburegama. The research papers were presented by lecturers of other departments and faculties of Colombo University as well as lecturers from other Universities. This symposium which was initiated in 2011 is to be continued annually.
"Sarasavi Vichara Kathikawa"
A critical conversation on the novel "Kandak Sēma" which was awarded as the best novel in 2009 was held on ….. December 2010 demonstrating a current requirement that must be done by a Department of Sinhala. The speeches were delivered by Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri, Senior Lecturer from History Department of University of Colombo and Dr. Liyanage Amarakeerthi, Senior Lecturer, Department of Sinhala, Peradeniya University. Many writers, journalists, University Lecturers and undergraduates also involved in the event.
Prof. M.B. Ariyapala Memorial Ceremony
A memorial ceremony of Prof. M.B. Ariyapala who was a well known former Professor of Sinhala Department of University of Colombo was held on 02-12-2011 at the main library auditorium.  Prof. Kusuma Karunaratne and Prof. Sarath Wijesooriya addressed the function.
Master of Arts Degree Programme
Master of Arts Degree Programme in Sinhala Department was initiated 19th of November, 2011.  Dr. Sandagomi Coparahewa is the coordinator of this programme.
Academic Workshop held at Dr. K. Jayatilaka's residence
A workshop was set up at great author, K. Jayathilaka's residence with the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Jayathilaka on 28th January, 2011.  All undergraduates who follow Sinhala Special degree took part in the event.  A conversational presentation about K. Jayathilaka's creations was also conducted by undergraduates.
Establishment of Alumni Association 02-04-2011
The Alumni Association of the Department of Sinhala was established with the intension of congregating all former graduates of the department. The presence of retired staff members to the occasion was exceptional.
The 50th Jubilee of Sinhabahu Stage Drama
Sinhabahu stage drama by Prof. Ediriweera Sarachchandra was staged on 30th August 2011 at the New Arts Theatre of University of Colombo to celebrate the 50th jubilee of the drama.
Field visit to University of Jaffna
Demonstrating good heart between Sinhalese and Tamils, the 2nd edition of "Sinhala Bhashawe Demala Wachana Akārādiya" by Senior Lecturer, Dr. Sandagomi Coparahewa and Sarojani Arunachalam was launched on 10th March 2011 at the University of Jaffna.  It was the first visit to Jaffna University by a Sinhala Department.  Some books were donated to Jaffna University in this occasion.
Birth Anniversary of great author Martin Wickramasinghe
A workshop was conducted in order to celebrate the birth of great author Martin Wickramasinghe with the presence of the Vice-chancellor of Colombo University, Prof. Kshanika Hirimburegama on 26th May, 2011.  There was a academic session in the morning. It was chaired by Prof. Kusuma Karunaratne.  The research papers were presented by Prof. Ananda Tissa Kumara, Dr. Sandagomi Coparahewa and Mr. Achinthya Bandara who was an undergraduate at that time.  The ground floor of the Arts Faculty was arranged to have a book fair and the books written by Martin Wickramasinghe could be bought there.  In the evening a literary discussion was chaired by Prof. A.V. Suraweera.  A found of one hundred thousand rupees was established by Martin Wickramasinghe custodian fund and it was decided to award Martin Wickramasinghe memorial prize on behalf of the best dissertation on modern Sinhala literature of the year.
Commencement of Sinhala Diploma
Sinhala Diploma course was commenced by the Department of Sinhala on 26-05-2011. Senior lecturer Premasiri Nagasinghe is the coordinator of this programme.
Makaranda Literary Workshop
A workshop was set up by the Sinhala society in collaboration with Rawaya newspaper at the ground floor of the Arts Faculty with the intension of ameliorating sensibility and creativity of students. A huge number of authors, journalists and undergraduates took part in the occasion.
