Certificate In English For Careers (EC)



Target Group

This course is suitable for students, with beginner to lower intermediate competency in
English. It provides opportunities to practise and improve speaking, reading, writing and listening skills in a working environment and social situations.

The course is recommended for those in middle and lower grades of employment as well  as adults who are seeking employment. It is also suitable for those intending to follow professional or academic courses in the English medium or requiring to improve their language skills before attempting advanced English courses.



This is a two year course: Part 1 in the first year and Part 11 in the second year. The Certificate in English for Careers is awarded only to those who successfully complete Part 11 of the course. The Final Examination at the end of each year of the course consists of two written papers and an oral examination.


The following persons are eligible to apply :

  1. Employed persons with

  2. At least 6 GCE O LEVEL  passes at one sitting or a pass at a higher examination.


  3. Unemployed persons with

  4. At least 3 passes at the GCE A LEVEL examination (before 2000) and 2 A Level passes (after 2000) and have failed to gain admission to any University in Sri Lanka as internal students.

    (Students awaiting results of the GCE A Level examination and internal students of any University or students who will be admitted to any University in the year 2012/2013 are not eligible to apply.)

  5. Unemployed university graduates

  6. AND
    The required score at the Placement Test.


All applicants are required to sit a Placement Test and obtain the required score for entry to the course. Applicants may enter directly to Part II of the course, depending on their scores at the Placement Test. Applicants who do not sit the Placement Test cannot be admitted to the course.
